Ah, Valentine. The day when we share chocolates to the one we loved. Not only chocolates, we could share anything as a show of love. This was a modern tradition. However, some took it to the next level. Have you ever feel that not receiving something from your loved one is a bane in itself? Welcome to my hopeless romantic story. And I hope you learned from it.
Valentine’s day is associated with love far before we started giving anything, and yet not receiving anything from your loved one is seen as wrong. This was the case with a girl I loved. I didn’t make it past the first Valentine’s day, just because I didn’t give her anything. I found out on the very next day that some used this day to judge love. Did they really love you? Did they really care about you?
I asked several friends I met and a few of them said the same thing: they do find that not receiving anything during Valentine is strange, even outright crazy. But why? Every Valentine’s day, I wondered the same thing. Every Valentine’s day I tried to unlock this bizzare mystery. Why, did you ask?
Well, it’s just a day. Love is not about gifts; it’s not a benchmark on your love. Love is about what you did that matters to the one you loved. It even didn’t have to be your boyfriend/girlfriend. It can be your friends, families, even yourself. Love is universal, and what you do to retain and give them is the importance of Valentine’s day. The memory matters more; giving something is just a bonus.
I explained this to her, my love. She finally got it 4 months after, on mid June. She wanted to come back, but it was too late. My heart is no longer for her, and it should keep that way for a very long time, for the scar she created took eternity to heal.
Enjoy Valentine’s day. Give your loved one the best day of their life. Forget the chocolates, it’s what you do that matters. I hope you learned something today.
